Okinawan Weapons Training
|
|
Many of traditional Okinawan training tools for Kobudo have an uncanny resemblance to their Persian counterparts. Today, when we talk about Kobudo, we refer to the Okinawan weapons training which includes "Bo" or "Roku-Shaku Bo" (Six foot staff), Tonfa, or Tuifa, Nunchaku, Kama (sickle), Sai, etc. These weapons were designed by indigenous Okinawans to help them defend themselves from the sharp edge of the samurai's sword, the rogue bandits roaming their countryside. The effectiveness of these weapons were so fascinating that some of today's weaponry used by police officers through out the world were designed after them i.e.: Pr-24 police baton which is practically identical to Tonfa. Even though in today's society such weapons are impractical and impossible to carry, in practicing Kobudo, the student will develop better stamina, balance and coordination which in no time at all will enhance their level of proficiency in Karate-do and all other activities. |
